Seeds and backups

Your seeds are your money. Whoever has them has your coins, and if your computer is lost, they are the only way to get your coins back. Biscuit never sends them anywhere, and nobody from Biscuit will ever ask for them.

What to write down

SeedWordsRestores
Monero16Your Monero wallet, all accounts and subaddresses

If you added a passphrase to a seed, you need the passphrase too. For an older 25-word Monero seed, note the restore height as well: it makes restoring much faster.

Keeping them safe

  • Write them on paper. Not in a photo, a cloud note, an email or a password manager that syncs online.
  • Check each word, in order, before you put the paper away.
  • Keep the paper where fire, water and curious people won’t reach it. Some people keep a second copy in another place.

Seeing them again

  • Wallet › Seed, or the seed button in the status bar, shows the Monero seed after your password. Show 25 word seed converts it for wallets that don’t know Polyseed; note the restore height shown with it.
  • Wallet › Bitcoin and Litecoin seeds shows the 12 words, and the seed of each wallet you added.
  • Wallet › Keys shows the Monero private keys.

View-only and hardware wallets have no Monero seed to show: the spend key isn’t on this computer.

What a seed doesn’t restore

Some things live only in your wallet files: labels, contacts, transaction descriptions, Monero transaction keys (needed for payment proofs), frozen coins, settings and the history of your swaps. Restoring from seeds brings your coins back, not these.

To keep them, also keep a copy of your wallet folder, encrypted as it is, on a drive you trust. Swap history matters most: exchanges delete trades after a while, so the copy in Biscuit may be the only record of a swap’s IDs if you ever need support.
