Wallet files and folders

Wallet › Information shows where the open wallet is stored, and Settings › Storage › Paths shows every folder Biscuit uses, with buttons to open them.

Folders

WalletsSettings and app data
WindowsDocuments\Biscuit\walletsAppData\Roaming\Biscuit
macOS~/Biscuit/wallets~/Library/Application Support/Biscuit
Linux~/Biscuit/wallets~/.config/biscuit

In portable mode and on Tails, both live in a biscuit_data folder next to Biscuit instead. To use another wallet folder, choose it in Settings › Storage › Paths; existing wallets aren’t moved for you.

A wallet’s files

FileWhat it holds
name.keysThe Monero keys and wallet settings. Lose it without your seed, and the coins are gone.
nameThe Monero cache: transactions, labels, contacts, notes, transaction keys, your Polyseed. Biscuit rebuilds most of it by syncing, but not labels, notes or transaction keys.
name.btcltcYour Bitcoin and Litecoin wallets: seeds, addresses, labels, contacts, swap history.

All three are encrypted with your password. The Monero files use Monero’s own scheme (ChaCha20, with a key derived from the password by CryptoNight). The Bitcoin and Litecoin file uses XChaCha20-Poly1305, with a key derived by Argon2id, which is deliberately slow and memory-hungry to make guessing passwords expensive.

If the Monero cache can’t be read, Biscuit renames it name.old_cache and builds a new one.

The settings folder

settings.jsonYour settings
datafeed-cache.jsonThe last prices and Journal, so they show at once on the next launch
tor/The Tor that Biscuit starts, and its data
atomicswaps/The state of your atomic swaps
libwallet.logMonero’s log, empty unless you turn on Settings › Storage › Logging

Never delete atomicswaps/ while a swap is running: it holds what Biscuit needs to finish it or get your Bitcoin back.

Other wallets

The Monero files are standard: a wallet from Feather or Monero’s own wallets opens in Biscuit, and the other way round. Keep both programs up to date before moving a wallet between them.
