Payment proofs
Monero transactions are private, so the blockchain alone can’t show that you paid someone. A proof can. Right-click a transaction in History › Create Tx Proof.
The three kinds
- Prove payment to an address (OutProof)
- Shows you sent a given amount to a given address. This is the one to use when someone says your payment never arrived.
- Prove authorship of a transaction (SpendProof)
- Shows you made the transaction, without saying to whom or how much.
- Prove ownership of an output (InProof)
- Shows you received an output of the transaction.
Add a message if you like, choose the address for an OutProof, then:
- Get Formatted Proof gives one block of text with everything in it, easy to share. Biscuit and Feather read this format.
- Get Signature gives the signature alone, for other wallets. The other side then also needs the transaction ID, the address and your message.
An OutProof needs the transaction key, which only the wallet that sent the payment has, in its files. After a restore from seed, older keys are gone. See Seeds and backups.
The transaction key
Some services ask for the “transaction secret key” instead. Right-click the payment › Show details › Copy Tx Secret Key. With it, the recipient can check the payment on a block explorer.
Verifying a proof
Tools › Verify transaction proof:
- Formatted: paste the whole block and click Verify. A valid one shows a green check and Proof is valid.
- Manual: choose the kind of proof, fill in the transaction ID, the address, the message and the signature, and click Verify.
Reserve proofs, which prove a balance, aren’t supported.
